Many years ago I came across pictures of “La Mortella”, a beautiful and inspiring garden on the Island of Ischia, Italy. Flash forward into the present time, while working on my series “When the Light Breaks into Pieces” which is inspired by light shimmering on the surface of water or dappled on a sunny day under the shade of a tree canopy, I decided to paint this abstraction that captures my impressions and the beauty of La Mortella.
 
At that time, I just had started listening to an album titled “The Creatures in the Garden of Lady Walton” by the band known as “Clogs”. The album cover was very particular, and I found myself returning to look at it with frequency, as the songs continued to play repeatedly while painting this artwork.
 
Later, I decided to learn more about the album’s cover art and discovered that Lady Walton was the creator and owner of the same gardens, those known as “La Mortella”!
 
I would like people to notice how abstractions work. The painting is an idea that is built upon using shapes, color, and rhythm to create an image with the intent of eliciting an emotional response.
 
I hope people experience a sense of balance, warmth, energy, and calm when viewing “La Mortella”, as I did while creating it.
