Beacon #1: The Beacon Series (2025)

30" x 6" x 6" (H x W x D)

Materials:  wood, jute, glue, concrete, felt, twisted SPT-1 cloth-covered lamp cord, antiqued brass electrical components, dimmer electronics and a “squirrel cage” G30 Edison bulb.

Michael and Carolina Ellenbogen’s collaborative  series of sculptures, The Beacon Series, under the signature Eg.Studio, presents a profound new sculpture series that offers a tangible affirmation of human resilience.

In a time of relentless change, the Ellenbogens created these permanent, steadfast forms to counter conflict and disinformation with the unmoving light of truth. Each sculpture is an enduring sentinel reflecting the fundamental human purpose that persists beyond the turbulence of the moment.

The power of this series lies in its deliberate material composition, which forges a physical mirror to the complex nature of human existence:

  • Elemental Foundation: Heavy, raw concrete forms the base, representing the anchor of steadfastness and the enduring core of humanity.
  • Biological Life: Wood and woven jute introduce our sentient nature. Wood signifies life cycles and endurance, while jute represents the durable, interwoven connections of humankind and our essential tether to the natural world.
  • Intellectual Light: Electrical components symbolize human ingenuity and logic. The electricity driving the light represents the intellect’s conscious intent to illuminate truth and guide our path forward.

By integrating these three elements—the Elemental, the Biological, and the Intellectual—The Beacon Series communicates a holistic vision of humankind, affirming that our inherent capacity for honesty and morality is the true foundation we seek for a better future.

Art + Design + Function

Each sculpture functions as a lamp, providing a warm, 2200k, dimmable glow from barely visible to 40 watts. Designed to illuminate a space without a shade. The concrete base is crafted with a 1/8” felt pad bottom and a 3/4’ recessed plywood block to allow the sculpture to be moved with relative ease and to leave any floor surface undamaged.
